Here are some tips from our very own Courtney Bell.
Spring season is in full bloom and there's no better way to freshen up your career search than with a little spring cleaning of your resume! Here are some tips on how to bring your resume out of hibernation:
Remove outdated or irrelevant experience. High School or College jobs that don't show relevant experience take up extra room. Be sure to include the positions that showcase experience needed for the job you're applying for.
Did you know? If you have been working longer than you have been out of school your Education section should be placed below Experience on your resume.
Include position start and end dates and be sure there's no gap between positions that's unaccounted for. It's best practice to include the month and year of the start and end dates of each role, otherwise the timeframe may seem vague or it might appear you've been hopping between jobs.
The importance of a progressive career. According to a study done by TheLadders, Recruiters spend, on average, 5-7 seconds looking at a resume. We look for a progressive career history that shows promotability and potential for future employers. Check out the article here.
Resume format is crucial! Keep your resume formatting clean and neat. Avoid extra spaces and large gaps in text. It's also a great idea to keep both a PDF and Word version of your document so hiring managers never have issues opening an electronic copy. After all, you only have six seconds to shine!
Did you know? The 'one page resume' standard is a myth. If you've got more pertinent experience than one page can hold, include it!
